Dr. Karen Hart is one of a kind in the Sacramento area. From her unique office to her personal care, Hart has taken her healing services a step further. She's offering free health care to women who are both homeless and jobless.
Dr. Hart has seen 14 other women from Women's Empowerment, all for free. The group is dedicated to helping the homeless succeed in life. Over 55 percent of the women who show up have no access to health care. Lisa Culp, executive director for Women's Empowerment, said when point in time surveys are done at the beginning of every session, 63 percent of the women have needed to go the emergency room within in the last two months.
Dr. Hart started her own private practice so she could help as much as possible without any obstacles or red tape. "Who's going to help the people who don't have the ability to pay, the invisible and the forgotten," Hart said. "And that's apart of my interest in caring." She hopes her decision to help spurs the interest of others in the community. Since providing free health care, Hart said she's received calls from nurses and other physicians who are interested in volunteering and seeing patients for free.
